How to split a bill with friends
- Enter the bill amount. Type the total on the bill, or tap one of the quick amounts.
- Pick a tip. Choose from the presets, or leave it at zero. Tipping is optional and depends on the country and setting.
- Set how many people are splitting. Tap + to add people, − to remove them.
- Read the result. Each person's share appears instantly on the right (or below on mobile).
Split evenly or by item
The tool has two modes at the top:
- Split evenly — everyone pays the same amount. Best for casual meals where you shared everything.
- Split by item — add each dish and tap who had it. Best for group dinners where people ordered different things and you want each person to pay only for what they ate.
Splitting evenly
Enter the total bill. Choose whether to add a tip, and set how many people are splitting. The tool divides the bill (plus tip) equally and shows the per-person amount. Use the Split between counter to change the number of people.
This mode is perfect when:
- You shared everything on the table, like at a family dinner or a party
- The bill is small and everyone had roughly the same thing
- You just want a quick number to send to the group chat
Splitting by item
- Switch to Split by item.
- Add each person's name (the tool starts with two — rename them).
- Add each dish with its price.
- Tap the names of the people who shared each item. An item with no one selected is treated as shared between everyone.
- Pick a tip percentage. By default the tip is divided in proportion to what each person ordered.
- Each person's total appears in the result panel.
This mode is perfect when:
- Someone ordered a steak and someone else had a salad
- You shared a few starters but had separate mains
- A couple shared one dish between them and wants to pay together
- You're at a party with a shared tab and want a fair breakdown
How much should I tip?
Tipping varies widely by country:
| Country | Standard tip |
|---|---|
| United States | 15% – 20% (sometimes 25% for excellent service) |
| Canada | 15% – 20% |
| United Kingdom | 10% – 12.5% (often added as a service charge) |
| France, Germany, Italy | 5% – 10% (often already included) |
| India | 5% – 10% at restaurants, often not expected elsewhere |
| Japan, South Korea | Not expected and sometimes refused |
| Australia, New Zealand | Not expected, 5% – 10% for excellent service |
| UAE, Middle East | 10% – 15% |
Share the split
Two ways to send the result to your group:
- WhatsApp — opens WhatsApp with a formatted message ready to send.
- Copy — copies the same text to your clipboard so you can paste it into any chat app or email.
