CGST, SGST and IGST
For an intra-state transaction (buyer and seller in the same state), the GST is split equally between the Central and State governments:
- CGST — Central GST, half of the total rate
- SGST — State GST, the other half
For an inter-state transaction (buyer and seller in different states), a single tax applies:
- IGST — Integrated GST, full rate, collected by the Centre and shared with the destination state
For 18% GST: intra-state is CGST 9% + SGST 9%; inter-state is IGST 18%. The total is the same either way — the split is different.
Formulas
Adding GST:
Total = Base × (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
Removing GST (reverse):
Base = Total ÷ (1 + Rate ÷ 100)
GST = Total − Base
Common real-world uses
- Invoicing — add GST to a service or product price before sending the bill.
- Expense tracking — from a receipt total, work out the base and the tax portion for accounting.
- Quotations — showing a client the price with and without GST.
- E-commerce — setting MRP and understanding what portion is tax.
- Filing returns — computing output tax on sales, input tax on purchases.
Common questions
How do I add GST to a price?
Multiply the base price by 1 plus the GST rate divided by 100. For 18% GST on ₹1,000, the total is ₹1,000 × 1.18 = ₹1,180.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive price by 1 plus the GST rate divided by 100. For an inclusive price of ₹1,180 with 18% GST, the base is ₹1,180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000.
When is IGST applied instead of CGST and SGST?
IGST is applied for inter-state transactions and imports. CGST and SGST apply to intra-state transactions.
What are the common GST rates in India?
The main slabs are 0%, 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. A few items fall at 0.25% (rough diamonds) or 3% (gold, silver). Some high-value items attract cess on top of 28%.
Is the total the same for intra-state and inter-state?
Yes. CGST 9% + SGST 9% = IGST 18%. The total tax is identical; only the split between Central and State differs.
Does the calculator handle cess?
Not directly — cess is only on specific items (tobacco, luxury cars, aerated drinks) and varies by item. If you need cess, add it as an additional rate on top of the GST slab.
