How to use the image converter
Drop images onto the page, choose the target format, and each file is converted. HEIC files from iPhone are decoded in the browser before conversion. Download individually or all together as a ZIP.
Nothing is uploaded. Everything runs in your browser.
HEIC support
iPhones shoot photos in HEIC format by default since iOS 11. It saves storage space (roughly 40% smaller than JPG at the same quality) but most desktop browsers can't display HEIC. This converter decodes HEIC using the heic2any library — a WebAssembly build of libheif that runs entirely in your browser.
The decoder is loaded only when you drop a HEIC file, so the tool stays fast for regular JPG/PNG conversions.
Choosing the right format
| Format | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Screenshots, logos, graphics with sharp edges, anything with transparency | Large file sizes, especially on photographs |
| JPG | Photographs, imagery with smooth gradients, universal sharing | No transparency, lossy — quality drops at low settings |
| WebP | Everything modern. Smaller than JPG and PNG at equivalent quality | Not supported by very old browsers (all modern ones are fine) |
| BMP | Legacy systems, specific software that needs raw bitmaps | Huge file sizes — typically 10× larger than JPG |
When to choose WebP
WebP is almost always the right answer for the web in 2026. It supports:
- Lossy compression — 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same visual quality
- Lossless compression — 25% smaller than PNG
- Transparency — like PNG, unlike JPG
- Animation — like GIF, at a fraction of the size
Format comparison at a glance
| PNG | JPG | WebP | BMP | |

Transparency and background color
If you convert a PNG with transparency to JPG or BMP, the transparent areas must become something. Choose White (default), Black, or a custom color. When the target format supports transparency (PNG or WebP), you can keep the transparency by selecting Keep transparent.
Quality settings for JPG and WebP
- 90–100% — print, portfolio, wherever quality matters more than size
- 80–85% — the sweet spot for websites and email
- 60–75% — social media, thumbnails
- Below 60% — noticeable artifacts, use only for tiny previews
What happens to GIF?
GIF input works, but animated GIFs convert to a single frame — the first one. Canvas doesn't decode animation. For animated output, use WebP.
Common questions
Can I convert HEIC files from my iPhone?
Yes. Drop a .heic or .heif file and the tool decodes it in your browser, then converts it to JPG, PNG, WebP or BMP. The file never leaves your device.
Which image formats are supported?
Input: HEIC, HEIF, PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP, GIF. Output: PNG, JPG, WebP, BMP.
Will converting reduce image quality?
JPG and WebP are lossy, so converting to them at low quality reduces quality. PNG and BMP are lossless. HEIC decoding is lossless to the underlying pixels.
What happens to transparency when I convert PNG to JPG?
JPG does not support transparency. Any transparent areas become the background color you choose, white by default.
Is my data uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your images never leave your device.
Why is my converted file larger than the original?
Compression settings matter. A high-quality JPG of a photo can be larger than a heavily-optimised PNG of the same photo. Try lowering the quality, or choose WebP for the smallest result. BMP will always be much larger than the source.
Does converting strip EXIF metadata?
Yes, by default. This tool strips metadata unless you uncheck "Strip metadata". Stripping removes GPS, camera model, and date-taken. Recommended for anything you'll share publicly.
Can I batch convert?
Yes. Drop as many images as you like. All convert to the same target format and settings. Download individually or as a ZIP.
